Grind Minded - Domestic Violence 2007 ( www.burningmisery.com)

After two self financed recordings "Your Suffering Will Be Legendary" released in 2001 and full length "9mm Facial" that has been recorded in 2005 old-school deathmetalers Grindminded found a label (Open Grave records) to release their in 2007 recorded "Domestic Violence" album. Grindminded is based in the north-east part from Holland and started their heavy up-tempo old school death metal eleven years ago. No technical and complicated metal but just the way it should be, killer old-school death metal with a raw recording sound that kick your fucking ass real hard. Like the earlier release "9mm Facial" Grindminded is still using the kick ass heavy and twisted guitar riffs with tight and blasting drums moves. The vocals that are coming out of Wim Eggens throat can be compared a bit with Barney from Napalm Death, low and fucking old-school. And if you think you can sit down and relax a bit while listening to this album? Fucking forget that, this is non stop up-tempo death metal from Holland with killer compositions all the way down to the last track. Slamming and brutal death metal is what you will hear when you will grab a copy of this Domestic Violence album from the Dutch Grindminded. The "Domestic Violence" album counts ten tracks and is still available for the death metal freaks so run to the Open Grave records website and get a copy , you will not be disappointed I'm fucking sure about that.

Grindminded is de grote broer van "Drents Bartje". Ik weet dat 100% zeker.
Menig gereformeerd mens zal zich in de broek poepen van angst en bruine bonen bij het horen van deze brute band uit Assen.
De muziek die Grindminded op dit debut aan ons voorschoteld is bijzonder agressief en direkt.
Songs als "domestic violence" en "chemical peeling" klinken voor deze stijl met hun meeslepende riffs echter ook zeer ritmisch. Grindminded heeft zich duidelijk laten beinvloeden door (oude) Zweedse death metalbands als Entombed en Dismember maar ook invloeden van de Carcass- en Repulsion-grindstijl zijn in de muziek terug te horen.
De productie is erg goed en met name de stem van Wim Eggens komt uitstekend tot zijn recht. Kortom, puike plaat van een band die stiekem alweer tien jaar meedraait en dat hoor je aan "Domestic violence" ook wel af. Voor fans van bovengenoemde bands is dit dan ook zeker een aanrader.

Masterful Magazine review

Grindminded sound like a partially successful mix between Dutch - and (early) Swedish death metal. Influences of (early) Altar, Unleashed and to a lesser degree Obituary run rampant on this debut album for Open Grave Records. The vocal delivery is rather monotoneous and while the riffing is solid, it isn't nearly as aggressive as one would expect of this genre. There isn't much in the way of complexity as the material on this record is as straightforward as one can expect. There isn't a whole lot of exciting material on this record and while every track has at least one high class riff or chord progression, the overall reaction towards this effort remains lukewarm. Grindminded's material will no doubt go over well in a live setting but these studio renditions leave much to be desired as the material isn't engaging or particularly strongly written. The production by Soundlodge Studios (Dew-Scented, God Dethroned, Mandrake, Resurrected, etc) is superb in its richly textured sound and definition. The guitar tone is thick, heavy yet remains clear at all times. The drums sound devastating with much attention paid to every section of the kit. The artwork, design and lay-out by Kieran Wakeman for Divine Chaos Art reminds in a way of the current Aborted artworks, although not as fully realized in concept and execution. Grindminded have delivered a capable, although not exceptionally outstanding genre record with "Domestic Violence".

Im Jahre 1997 gegründet und bisher nur zweimal in Form eines Longplayers in Erscheinung getreten sind GRIND MINDED. Ihre Debütscheibe "Your Suffering Will Be Legendary" schlug 2001 in der Undergroundszene ein. Darauf folgte "9mm Facial" und bereitete den Weg zum heutigen Tage. Nun ist das nächste Album erhältlich was den schönen Namen "Domestic Violence" trägt. Diesen Holländern merkt man an, dass sie schon mehr als 10 Jahre mucken auf dem Buckel haben. Diese CD schlägt rein wie eine Bombe. Mit den typischen genreüblichen Themen, wie z.B. töten, abmurksen, killen, Brutalität und ähnlichem heben sie sich zwar nicht besonders ab von der Masse, jedoch ist das Zusammenspiel von Sound und Können hier eine absolute Wucht.

Mit dem Titeltrack beginnend wälzt sich diese Scheibe geradezu durch die Gehörgänge und knüppelt dabei so ziemlich alles nieder, was sich ihr in den Weg stellt. "Killing Spree" ist einer der brutalsten Songs dieser Platte, gefolgt von "Chemical Peeling", bei dem das erste mal die düstere Groovewalze ausgepackt wird. Bei den meisten Tracks wechselt man stilvoll zwischen Blastbeats und Grooves und orientiert sich dabei immer wieder an bekannten Bands wie z.B. alten Six Feet Under oder Vader. "Morbid Fascination (Thanksgiving)" ist der stärkste Song der Platte, da er nicht nur vor Abwechslung strotzt, sondern auch einen unbändingen, genickbrechenden Groove im Gepäck hat. Dicht gefolgt wird dieser Song von "Impaled With A Grin", der noch ein kleines Fünkchen mehr Power und Kraft mit sich bringt aber songtechnisch nicht ganz mithalten kann. Alle anderen Songs bewegen sich immer zwischen genial und gut, so dass diese Scheibe ein schöner Ohrenschmaus ist.

Fazit: Geile Songs, geiler Sound, geile Stimmung. Passt!

Blabbermouth review

Fairly rote death metal from the Netherlands, GRINDMINDED dishing up the kind of simple, third-tier grind CD destined to wind up in the $5 clearance box in your favorite metal distro in the back of a concert hall. Riffs are rudimentary, vocals unremarkable, and the songs differentiated only by what gear the drummer's in — here a blast, there a thrash polka, and once in a while a little midtempo for ersatz atmosphere.

The thing is, while it's impossible to say GRINDMINDED are doing anything the world really needed, it must be pointed out that they're a competent, reasonably catchy band and that they acquit themselves well here. Those looking for a new run through old death metal conventions, without anything so annoying as a unique take on them, will find "Domestic Violence" satisfying in a low-watt kind of way. Calling it "generic" almost seems too harsh — it seems pretty deliberate that the band is creating middle-of-the-road death metal with no frills or outside influences. It's just that the results, while nobly true to the cause, are also fairly unremarkable.

There's not much else to say — GRINDMINDED can blast like DERANGED or dish up slower numbers a la GOREFEST, they deliver suitably offensive lyrics and imagery, and there's nary a clean vocal, violin, or hardcore part to be found. If you buy records solely on your own personal scale of integrity points, this will be a mandatory purchase for you. But there's just no getting around the overall lack of personality here — and there's too much great music out there to spend time and money on the willfully average.

Een van de vele metalbands die ons land rijk is heet Grind Minded. De één zal deze band zonder pardon in het grindcore vakje stoppen, terwijl de ander misschien nog wat aarzelend naar het deathmetal hoekje kijkt. De muziek van deze band bevat eigenlijk beide stijlen. Op het ene moment krijg je een knuppel tegen je kop met daarop de letters 'grindcore' en niet veel later zit je naar een lekker potje groovende deathmetal te luisteren. Wat het ook is, bruut en afwisselend is het zeker. Reden genoeg om het debuutalbum Domestic Violence eens te beoordelen.

De eerder besproken afwisseling tussen death en grind tref je bijvoorbeeld aan in de track Payback Time. Tijdens dit nummer zijn de drums van Erwin Koerts op bepaalde momenten lekker snel en vervolgens zo groovend dat er wel geheadbanged móet worden. Met momenten denk ik aan Cannibal Corpse, sommige nummers van "ons" Grind Minded bevatten namelijk dezelfde lompheid (in positieve zin) als hun Amerikaanse collega's. Het nummer Stalker is daar een goed voorbeeld van. Rustpunten kent dit album eigenlijk niet, zelf heb ik daar geen problemen mee maar ik kan me voorstellen dat sommige luisteraars snel verveeld raken bij het beluisteren van deze plaat. Hoewel de drums op Domestic Violence me nog het meest aanspreken zijn ook de andere factoren van groot belang. De riffs van de heren Jerry Duinkerken en Mathijs Odding zijn aanstekelijk en de rotte, rauwe stem van Wim Eggens maakt er een gewelddadig totaalplaatje van.

Op dit album is bassist Jasper Bolderdijk nog te horen, hij heeft de band inmiddels verlaten en een ware snarenplukster genaamd Gea Mulder heeft zijn plek ingenomen. Domestic Violence is in ieder geval een indrukwekkend debuutalbum van eigen bodem. In principe niets nieuws onder de zon maar dat hoeft ook helemaal niet. Gewoon een dik half uur kwalitatief beuken!

Dennis: I wasn't all too positive about the last album '9mm Facial' of Dutch death metallers Grindminded, and still our chief editor has passed this CD on to me for reviewing. Somewhat sceptical I started listening to their third full length album 'Domestic Violence' and to my surprise I must say these guys have developed in a positive way. Now, three years later, the band has landed a contract with US based Open Grave Records and also parted ways with their bassist and co-founder Henke, who left to play with God Dethroned. On 'Domestic Violence' he is replaced by Jasper Bolderdijk (who has recently been replaced by Gea Mulder). Together with producer Jörg Uken, Grindminded recorded ten new tracks in the Soundlodge Studios in Germany, where bands like Obscenity, Toxocara, God Dethroned and Dew Scented recorded earlier as well.

'Domestic Violence' is another violent display of raw old school death metal, with a singer who sounds somewhat like Jan-Chris de Koeijer in Gorefest's early days. Grindminded play their death metal with conviction and like I already mentioned, the band has made quite some progress compared to the'9mm Facial' album. Songs like 'Killing Spree' and 'Impaled With A Grin' are catchy and brutal at the same time and after listening to the songs a couple of times they even stick around in your head. The old school death metal sound of Grindminded is still not original at all, but since old school is not about being innovative, the sound is just right. 'Domestic Violence' simply is the right food for old school death metal fans. Add to this a powerful production and professional looking cover artwork and Grindminded have the perfect foundation to tour around the underground clubcircuit for another year or two.

Gelukkig, de deathmetalunderground floreert nog steeds. Ook in ons land, waar dit genre steeds meer openbaar terrein wint, blijken nog steeds bands te huizen die al jaren albums uitbrengen zonder dat ze door het grotere publiek worden opgepikt.

Ik denk dat ik zo vrij kan zijn om de Overijsselse Grind Minded tot die underground te rekenen. Eind vorig jaar bracht de band het derde album uit alweer, en dat terwijl de meeste mensen bij het vallen van de bandnaam geen bovenhoofdse lampjes ontsteken. Wel, dat doet er verder ook niet toe, wat er wél toe doet is dat Grind Minded met de derde cd Domestic Violence wel degelijk progressie heeft geboekt. Waren de voorgangers nog écht voer voor de undergrountouristen, Domestic Violence klinkt alweer wat gecompliceerder, meer gecontroleerd en slagvaardiger.

Een kraker is het nog net niet, met name omdat de cd op den duur eentonig wordt. Grind Minded speelt een rauwe pot old school deathmetal die met name tijdens de eerste helft van de cd toch echt wel indruk maakt. De schijf klinkt zwaar en smerig en vooral de dominante, schurende stem van de "Skinpeeler" valt bijzonder op. Toch is diezelfde strot tevens strop, want na de eerste vijf nummers slaat de muzikale stagnatie toe en heb ik het ook allemaal wel gehoord. Hoewel de band wel met het tempo speelt ontlopen de riffs elkaar niet veel en blijft het geluid constant, waardoor de nummers te veel op elkaar gaan lijken. Voor de vocalen geldt hetzelfde. Wat er gedaan word klinkt solide, maar dit stemgebruik is met name van blijvende waarde voor de echte liefhebber die geen moeite heeft met de geringe variatie van de ingrediënten.

Met Domestic Violence zit Grind Minded wat mij betreft absoluut op de goede weg maar blijft voorlopig nog de band van de exclusievelingen. Old school deathmetal blijft ook een lastig genre om in uit te blinken, we houden Grind Minded echter in 't vizier.

"Reise in die Neunziger"

Kein unbeschriebenes Blatt mehr sind die niederländischen Oldschooler von GRIND MINDED. Seit etwa einer Dekade tummeln sich die Herren – und neuerdings das Mädel – durch den Underground. Mit „Domestic Violence“ schieben sie ihr drittes offizielles Album an den Start.

Letzteres erscheint beim amerikanischen Label Open Grave Records und bietet absolut schnörkellosen Neunziger-Death Metal in Reinkultur. GOREFEST, GRAVE, UNLEASHED und MASSACRE standen zu gleichen Teilen auf dem Speisezettel der Band mit dem irreführend brutalen Image und dem noch irreführenderen „Grind“ im Bandnamen. Von jener Richtung ist in der Musik der lustigen Käsköpp nämlich null netto vorhanden. Stattdessen gibt es permanent so was von Riffgewitter auf die Kopfbedeckung, dass man sich schon vor Freude einnässt. Ein bisschen früh vielleicht, denn hat sich die Euphorie über die prinzipiell schönen Weisen der tiefer gestimmten Musikalien ein wenig verflüchtigt, bleibt übrig, dass es sehr schwierig ist, hier ein paar echte Neuerungen oder stattdessen meinetwegen wirklich herausragende Nummern zu finden. „Sweet Sweat“ und „Impaled With A Grin“ erfüllen letzteres Kriterium noch am ehesten, aber so wahnsinnig haut auch das den heutigen Deather einfach nicht aus den Latschen.

Fazit: „Domestic Violence“ ginge im Grunde voll in Ordnung, würden sich die Songs nicht alle auf einer kompositorischen Linie befinden. Mehr Abwechslung und/oder ein paar echte Highlights müssen noch her, dann kann man bald viel weiter oben mitspielen als zurzeit.
