| Hybrid Drums - Drum Setup Photos from the next album session
Since Kekal's 3rd album "The Painful Experience" (2001), we've been using so-called Hybrid Drums: that is a mix of realtime performance and mathematical/matrix programming. The realtime performances were done on MIDI drumpads, and the matrix programming was done in the computer (through a mutitrack software). But all the sounds of the drums are taken from real, recorded drums that we recorded/sampled before.
These are the photos of the drum recording session for the next Kekal album. This time I played the real drums myself, I mean I recorded real acoustic drums using simple drumkit, not just hitting the electronic drumpads.. But still it will be the hybrid-drumming, because some of the drum performance I chopped them and made them as hundreds of loops (in separate tracks) to be re-arranged later on, while the other ones I recorded as samples one hit by one hit.. On some songs, I only use the performance on kick and snares while the hats and cymbals were programmed and taken from samples I recorded.. The other songs I recorded only the hi-hat and cymbals while using the pre-recorded drum loops from a hip-hop soundbank borrowed from a friend.. And on one song I use only 2 room microphones to record the entire drums.. Lots of crazy stuff.. That's the hybrid-drumming is all about.. crazy!
Photo 1: I didn't need more toms because I only used for sample (I edited the pitch later on from 2 toms), same with cymbals. The real performance is mainly used to create the groove, which is between snare and kick, and hi-hat or ride.

Photo 2: Notice the rug used on the kick. It's to eliminate the leak of kick sound, to maximize the editing process.

Photo 3: Kick. 2 mics on them, one is a standard kick mic (guess the name/type) and the other one is pzm (pressure zone) mic placed on top of the aluminum briefcase. The combination of both sounds pretty good, but unfortunately not during the double pedal. I triggered the double pedal (and used the kick sound recorded years earlier).

Photo 4: Kick - front

Actually it all began because of the lack of resources (no available drummer) and lack of time (not enough time to do weekly rehearsals), but once we got the way-out by doing that hybrid-drumming, we just kinda 'addicted' to that method until now... |
