The cover artwork for METALLICA's new album, "Death Magnetic", can be viewed below.

In an interview conducted yesterday (Wednesday, July 16) by VG TV at the opening show of the second leg of METALLICA's European summer tour in Bergen, Norway, guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield stated about the new album title, "'Death Magnetic', at least the title, to me, it's… It had something to do with… It started out as kind of a tribute to people that have fallen in our business, like Layne Staley [ALICE IN CHAINS] and a lot of the people that have died, basically — rock and roll martyrs of sorts. And then it kind of grew from there. Thinking about death… some people are drawn towards it, and just like a magnet, some people are drawn towards it, [and] other people are afraid of it and push away. And the concept that we're all gonna die sometimes is over-talked about and then a lot of times never talked about — no one wants to bring it up; it's the big white elephant in the living room. But we all have to deal with it at some point. So that's kind of the subject matter."

METALLICA has announced that every song "Death Magnetic" will be available to download for Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on the same date that the record arrives in stores, reports The Pulse of Radio. A post at the band's official web site stated, "It's a first in both music and gaming...The same day that 'Death Magnetic' hits the streets, you'll be able to download every song from the album for Guitar Hero III! We are so psyched that we'll be the first out of the gate with this simultaneous release...Who knows?! Maybe a few years from now this will be the norm when your favorite band's new record comes out."

The post added that "Death Magnetic" will also be available for the new World Tour edition of Guitar Hero, which is due out this fall.

Rumors of an all-METALLICA edition of Guitar Hero have been making the rounds recently, but the game's publishers have not confirmed this.

"Death Magnetic" is due out in September and was produced by METALLICA and Rick Rubin.

A deluxe box set edition of the album will be available in the U.S. The coffin box package will contain one CD featuring the album, another containing demos, a behind-the-scenes DVD, an exclusive T-shirt, a METALLICA flag, a collection of guitar picks, codes for a special live download and a poster.

The coffin box will only be available through Metallica.com, MetClub.com, and MissionMetallica.com.

Several other editions of "Death Magnetic" will also be offered for sale through the Mission: Metallica site, including an all-digital version and a high-end edition featuring five vinyl LPs and a lithograph.

METALLICA's next U.S. date is the one-day Ozzfest on August 9 in Dallas, with a full North American tour slated to begin in October.

The old style logo is a good sign....but really doesn't mean shit.

The funniest thing that I have read on the net since this came out was -"...the only thing missing from the cover was Cliff turning over and over for the last twenty odd years".

METALLICA has revealed the official track listing (in the final running order) for its new album, "Death Magnetic". It is as follows:

01. That Was Just Your Life
02. The End Of The Line
03. Broken, Beat & Scarred
04. The Day That Never Comes
05. All Nightmare Long
06. Cyanide
07. The Unforgiven III
08. The Judas Kiss
09. Suicide & Redemption
10. My Apocalypse

METALLICA has revealed the cover artwork (see below) for the band's upcoming ninth studio album, "Death Magnetic", at its official web site. The black and white etching features what appears to be an open grave, with lines emanating out from it and the band's logo and album title underneath.

Sounds like copywrite infringement to me. Wink

Beside the free access to "Mission: Metallica" website, marketed as Experience 1 – which includes footage of writing and recording of Death Magnetic, riffs and excerpts from it, exclusive photos and live tracks – three different commercial packages of the album were revealed as "Mission: Metallica Platinum" options, along with an additional collector's edition:[27]

Experience 2:

Digital download of Death Magnetic at 320 kbit/s, ringtones, two live shows, additional 2 hours of exclusive "making of" footage, 250 photos – plus all the above (from Experience 1);
Experience 3:

A physical copy of Death Magnetic CD – plus all the above (from Experiences 1–2);
Experience 4:

A set of Death Magnetic on 5 vinyl LP albums, in a 180-gram box, with 5 individual sleeves, a "Mission: Metallica" lithograph – plus all the above (from Experiences 1–3).
The Box Magnetic – Death Magnetic (Death in a Coffin):[28]

A collector's edition white coffin-shaped box, in three different sizes (M, L, or XL), which includes: the Death Magnetic CD in a special carton box, the additional CD with 10 demos of the songs from the album[28], a DVD of even more "making of" footage not seen on "Mission: Metallica", an exclusive t-shirt with a Death Magnetic logo, a flag, guitar picks, a fold out coffin-shaped poster with the members of Metallica[28], and a collector's credit card with a code for a free download of a European show in September.[29]
The box set is already available for pre-order in: United Kingdom, Australia, Poland, Finland, Norway, Spain, Switzerland and Sweden.
On July 17, 2008 (2008-07-17), the album's cover art was revealed through the "Mission Metallica" site. The cover features an empty coffin with a black and white design around it (representing iron filings in a magnetic field) with the Metallica logo at the bottom.

I in some weird and strange way am interested in hearing this. It would be nice if they streamed the album before release. But I don't see that happening.

I know that I can't bring myself to purchasing this blindly however.
